Vatican City is a landlocked city-state surrounded by Rome. It became independent from Italy in 1929 through the Lateran Treaty. Governed by the Holy See, it holds spiritual and diplomatic authority. "Vatican" also refers to the pope, the Holy See, and the Roman Curia.
